Key takeaways
- AEO turns your pages into clear, quotable answers to the questions buyers ask.
- Start each answer with one or two plain sentences of about 40 to 60 words, then add detail.
- Use question headings, lists, steps and tables, because answer engines extract them easily.
- FAQ sections and structured data help machines understand questions and answers.
- AEO, SEO and GEO work best together: one strong page can rank, be quoted and be cited.
1What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is a way of writing and structuring web content so that it directly answers specific questions. An “answer engine” is any system that replies with an answer rather than a list of links: Google featured snippets and People Also Ask, voice assistants, and AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.
Google explains that featured snippets are chosen automatically from pages that answer the question well, and that there is no special markup to request one (Google Search Central: featured snippets). AEO is about making your answer the clearest one available.
2AEO vs SEO vs GEO
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | Can people find my page? | Is my content the answer? | Do AI assistants mention my brand? |
| Typical result | A ranking in search results | A featured snippet, PAA answer or voice answer | A mention or citation in an AI-written answer |
| Key work | Technical SEO, content, links | Direct answers, question headings, FAQs, tables | Brand facts, third-party mentions, quotable data |
The three overlap. A page that ranks well (SEO) and opens with a clear answer (AEO) is also more likely to be cited by AI tools (GEO). Read our generative engine optimization guide for the GEO side.
3A simple AEO method for any page
- List the real questions. Collect questions from People Also Ask, Search Console queries, sales calls and customer messages.
- Give each question a heading. Use the question itself, or a close version, as an H2 or H3.
- Answer in the first sentences. Write one or two plain sentences of about 40 to 60 words that fully answer the question, before any background.
- Add structure for detail. Follow with steps, bullet lists or a comparison table, which answer engines can lift directly.
- Add FAQ and structured data. Put common questions in an FAQ section with FAQPage markup, and use Article, Service or Product markup where it fits.
- Keep facts current. Update prices, dates and process details so answer engines do not quote outdated information.
Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a small group of authoritative sites, but FAQ content and markup still help search engines and AI tools understand your answers.
4AEO examples: before and after
| Before | After (answer-first) |
|---|---|
| “We are a leading agency with years of passion for excellence…” | “A local SEO agency helps businesses appear in Google Maps for nearby customers. It manages your Google Business Profile, reviews, citations and location pages.” |
| A long paragraph about pricing | A table of plans with what each includes and the monthly price |
| One generic FAQ | Five FAQs taken from People Also Ask and customer questions |
5How to measure AEO
- Featured snippets and People Also Ask answers won for your target questions.
- Impressions and clicks for question queries in Google Search Console.
- Whether AI tools quote or paraphrase your answers when asked the same questions.
- Leads from question-led pages in GA4.

7FAQ
What is answer engine optimization in simple words?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) means writing your content so search engines and AI tools can use it as the direct answer to a question. It uses question headings, short direct answers, lists, tables and FAQs.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO builds on SEO. Your page still needs to be crawlable, fast and trusted to be chosen as an answer. AEO changes how you write and structure the content on that page.
How long should an AEO answer be?
Start with one or two sentences, roughly 40 to 60 words, that fully answer the question. Then add steps, lists or a table for readers who want detail.
Does FAQ schema still help?
Google shows FAQ rich results for very few sites now, but FAQ content and FAQPage markup still help search engines and AI tools understand which questions you answer.
Which pages should I optimize for AEO first?
Start with service pages, pricing pages and guides that already get impressions in Google Search Console for question searches.
